Depilatory products
This category covers creams, mousses, gels, lotions and powder. These products contain an active chemical agent with high pH which reacts when contacting with the proteins in hairs and dissolves these. This method is simple, fast (from 5 to 15 minutes depending on the product and nature of the hair) and above all painless!
This is a method which is often compared with razor blades and has quite a few advantages as compared to these:
- -The skin remains smoother for longer because depilatory products eliminate the hair inside the skin's pores (razors do not get as far as this).
- -Apart from dissolving the hair, depilatory products round off its ends, which means that when they grow again the scratchy sensation on your skin will not be so acute.
- -There is no risk of cuts.
- -Depilatory products eliminate the dead cells in the skin with their formulas, meaning that apart from depilating they have an exfoliation effect, thus preventing the appearance of subcutaneous hair.
- -Depilatory products are generally enriched with moisturising agents to leave the skin nourished and silky.
Waxes
There are several compositions of waxes: beeswax, resin and sugar wax. The principle of wax is enveloping the hair to pull it out from the root. After the wax is applied it is removed with a sharp tug (with or without a strip, depending on the type of wax). This method, which may at first be a little painful, slows up hair growth and leaves the skin soft and hair-free for several weeks (generally from 4 to 6 weeks).
There are three types of wax on the market:
- Hot wax: supplied in pearl or tablet form, partially melting when heated up. The heat enables the pores to open, which means you can get optimum results. A specific electrical device is used to heat this up and it does not require strips to be pulled off.
- Warm wax: comes in jar or roll-on versions and is normally based on sugar, meaning that it is soluble in water. Any remains of wax can thus be easily removed after depilation. It is heated up in the microwave oven or Bain Marie and requires auxiliary strips to be pulled off.
- Cold wax: this is sold ready for use between two strips of cellulose, with no need to be heated up. It is very practical and easy to use, which is why it is applied by more and more people all the time.
Hair - growth Inhibitors / Retardants
SThese are creams or lotions which slow up hair growth. They are applied directly after depilation, their active ingredients, thus penetrating right down to the hair follicle, slowing up the hair-growth stage and meaning that depilation can be applied less often and also weakening the hair so that this process is less painful.
Bleaching creams
Consisting of active decolouring agents, it allows any hair that you do not wish to remove to be concealed by lightening this. Easy, long-lasting and painless.
Razors
This is a simple, fast and economic method, very often the most widely used solution. It nevertheless involves a risk of cuts which can even leave scars and also, through cutting the hair at skin level, means that this grows quickly and strongly, causing itchiness in the skin.
Depilatory tweezers
Only for the very bravest or for parts of the body such as the eyebrows or chin - tweezers work like wax, except for needing to go hair by hair. Remember to disinfect the tweezers and also the depilated zone properly to prevent any infection of the hair follicle.
Electrolysis
The principle consists in inserting a fine needle down to the hair follicle and releasing an electrical current to kill the hair root. This method is very slow because it is necessary to work hair by hair. It is also sometimes necessary to wait up to a year for the hair not to grow again. It all depends on the growth phase in which the hair is found when supplied the current.
Laser
This is the most recent method and easily the most expensive. It works in the same way: a liquid is applied on the skin which penetrates down to the hair follicles. The laser sweeps over the skin and its heat is absorbed by the liquid inserted, burning
