History of depilation
Whether applied for religious, aesthetic, hygienic, erotic or prophylactic reasons, depilation is an ancestral and universal practice.
According to archaeological sources, this persecution of body hair could in fact date as far back as to the Age of Cavemen. 2000 years ago, men removed their beards with the aid of sharpened stones and mollusc shells.
The Chinese, long before our times, were already plucking out their eyebrows and replacing these with a black pencil line (the Romans did this later on, but without retracing the line).
The Arabs used the thread method. They looped a thread around the hair, made a knot and pulled it out. What patience they must have had!
The Egyptians, like the Babylonians and the Phoenicians, waged war on hair with the help of razors and bronze depilatory tweezers, which they even took with them to their tombs! Some of them already started to use depilation methods based on sugar or beeswax.
It was the Turks who used the first chemical depilation method known of, "rusma", a mixture of quicklime and starch that was used in the harems
