but what is hair?
Hair Growth CycleEarly: Anagen Catagen Telogen Early Growth Active Growth Regression Resting
Human beings are born with about two million hairs in our bodies, but fortunately in the great majority of hair follicles only tiny hairs almost invisible to the naked eye grow.
A hair has three different parts:
The visible part that extends from the skin is the hair shaft, then there is the rootwhich is the zone penetrating the dermis, and lastly the bulb, which is inside the hair follicle (responsible for hair growth).
There are three types of hair that can be seen on the skin:
- -Vellus hair (Down or fuzz):colourless hair that is almost invisible. This is what is known as "peach fuzz".
- -Intermediate: fine, slightly pigmented hair.
- -Terminal: thick hair, pigmented and well rooted. This is the sort that we are up against!
Our hair goes through three stages of growth:
- -Anagen: hair growth period. It is in this stage that depilatory products are the most effective.
- -Catagen: short transition phase during which the hair follicle starts to weaken.
- -Telogen: period of hair regression and death, which will be followed by a new stage of growth of an anagen hair.
Ouch!: Why does it hurt to much when we pull out a hair?
The root, which penetrates the dermis, is surrounded by blood vessels, glands and nerves, which mean that when you pull a hair out you feel that intense pain which fortunately goes away in a few seconds.
